Dedicated to my late friend Peter N.
Many cultures associate seagulls with freedom, opportunity, and adaptability. Death signifies a complete breaking free from the restrictions of ordinary life, and the seagull perfectly embodies that spirit.
In a symbolic sense, the seagull reminds us to move where the best resources might be. Many of us deny ourselves opportunities because we feel safe in our comfort zone. These birds showing up in your life may be a sign to fly out of our realm of comfort, take a great risk, and do so with the goal of finding better conditions for our well-being.
The book "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" by Richard Bach is a modern cultural legend that reinforces that essence of freedom the seagull is known for. The story is about a seagull who is disenchanted with the common way of seagull-life. He strives to break from the shackles of convention. He pushes himself to fly ever higher, and perform more elaborate flight maneuvers in an effort to be free from the mundane.
When seagulls soar into our consciousness, it might be a sign to break out of the same, boring routine. It might be time to fly high, show the world our potential, and dare to be free from what the world expects us to be.
People born under this totem or who have a seagull as their spirit animal are loners who love spending their time alone with their thoughts and emotions. They are usually artists and creators that enjoy spending time alone with their minds, beyond restrictive borders. In everything around them they see an opportunity to express their creativity and artistic talent.
Once a person comes along with whom they can deeply connect, they can express their true self without fear of being judged or ridiculed, and finally be who they really are.
